Harbour City Ferries is a joint venture between Broadspectrum (Australia) Pty Ltd and Transdev Australasia. Harbour City Ferries operates approximately 175,000 services, transporting more than 17 million people across Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River each year. The extensive network connects 39 destinations and spans approximately 37 kilometres from Parramatta in Sydney's west, Manly in the north and Watsons Bay in the east.

About the Opportunity

Harbour City Ferries has an exciting opportunity for a GM - Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ) to join their team in Hunter Street, Sydney. 

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, you'll drive the strategic and operational aspects of SHEQ at Harbour City Ferries. This role will support the organisation in the delivery of a safe, sustainable ferry service by providing superior SHEQ systems, policies and practices. You will also lead the continued development of a customer centric culture and improvements to health and safety.

Your duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Developing and implementing systems which drive and enhance the safety culture;
  • Ensuring that all activities of the SHEQ team and broader organisation comply with safe working procedures and standards;
  • Providing advice and leadership in relation to SHEQ strategy, compliance with relevant legislation, regulation and standards;
  • Preparing SHEQ strategy and annual plan, and developing internal policy;
  • Provide accurate and timely advice and recommendations to senior management on environmental performance and compliance; 
  • Oversight of Workers Compensation & Injury Management 
  • Conduct and report on environmental monitoring programs.
  • Monitoring SHEQ lead and lag performance indicators, and formulating and implementing appropriate action plans; and
  • Maintaining accredited SHEQ systems and management of associated audits.

To be successful in this position you will have significant operational experience at an Executive Management level and have a proven track record of managing change and achieving results. You will have demonstrable success in a safety, health, environment and/or quality discipline at a senior management level, and any experience in a transport, maritime or highly regulated environment is also highly desirable. 

As this is a leadership role, you must be able to demonstrate that you can manage a strong team of SHEQ professionals, supporting and assisting business managers in operational health, safety and environmental requirements, injury and claims management. You will do this through leading, coaching, guiding and mentoring the business managers in the identification of health, safety and environment needs and development of solutions.

Harbour City Ferries are looking for someone who has experience in the end-to-end development and implementation of SHEQ systems and in depth knowledge of the relevant legislation and applicable standards. It is essential that you have a proven record in a business environment that requires the use of analytical and problem solving techniques. You will also be able to undertake investigative research to obtain, clarify and validate information which may require explanation and interpretation.

And finally, highly developed communication and interpersonal skills including strong negotiation skills are a must. You will show a high level of intuitive judgement and the proven capacity to provide strategic advice to senior managers and colleagues on a range of complex and sensitive issues.
