About the Opportunity

Harbour City Ferries has a fantastic opportunity for a process-driven Maritime Safety Health Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Officer to join their professional team. Reporting to the Manager (SHEQ), you will be responsible for managing the development and implementation of maritime and safety strategies, programs, standards and processes.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include:

  • Driving improved levels of maritime work health and saftey;
  • Providing expert advice and implement maritme and work health and safety strategies, programs, systems, policies, standards and processes;
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships with managers and staff to promote maritime WHS;
  • Conducting structured investigation and analysis of incidents and developing recommendations to prevent recurrence;
  • Developing schedules and conducting planned maritime safety and WHS risk assessments;
  • Developing and maintaining a maritime Risk Register to identify and manage hazards, safety issues and risk levels; 
  • Collaborating with all levels of HCF ferries staff to ensure that the SHEQ management system requirements are developed and implemented with meaningful consultation; and
  • Researching relevant legislation, regulations and best practice standard to support the development of health and safety management strategies.

To be successful in this role, you will hold tertiary qualifications in work health and safety, and will be eligible for membership with the Safety Institute of Australia. You'll have a demonstrated track record of achievement in implementing maritime safety, as well as in the development of work health and safety systems, processes and programs. Additionally, you will also have a sound knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation including Work Health and Safety Act 2011, International Safety Management Code, Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008, Marine Legislation and Regulations and the Transport Passenger Act 1990 and Regulations.

Harbour City Ferries are looking for an experienced team player who is able to independently conduct vessel and workplace based audits and inspections.  Importantly, you will have strong interpersonal communications skills including skills in consultation and facilitation.  Excellent written communication skills along with the ability to produce clear, coherent reports is also essential.  

You'll also be a team player with strong communication skills and computer literacy, supported by sound organisational and administrative skills.
